Decentralized identity leaders partner to accelerate DID method standardization

Collaborating to support DID-based ecosystems

Decentralized identifiers (DIDs) are elemental in building secure digital identity systems, offering extensibility and agency for both organizations and individuals.

Decentralized Identity Foundation (DIF), Trust Over IP (ToIP) Foundation, W3C Credentials Community Group (W3C CCG), W3C Decentralized Identifier Working Group (W3C DID WG), and other leading organizations have been instrumental to the growth and success of DIDs. The leaders of these organizations are committed to continued standardization enabling robust DID-based ecosystems and have partnered to accelerate this work.

The leaders of DIF, ToIP, W3C CCG, W3C DID WG, and other key organizations have jointly developed a Letter of Intent outlining our plans to collaborate on DID method standardization.

Highlights

This Letter of Intent establishes the following priorities:

  • Prioritize key DID method categories: Categories of DID methods that have proved broadly useful to-date include self-resolvable, web-based, and decentralized methods. This effort will prioritize standardization of indicative methods (or sets of methods) across these categories.
  • Collaborate: Establish working group and liaison agreements among key organizations to minimize barriers to participation.
  • Ensure broad engagement: Engage the broader community of DID builders, innovators, and adopters in developing a detailed roadmap.

Details and Refined Roadmap

Our efforts will produce specifications, conformance criteria, test vectors, and test suites to ensure compatibility beneficial across all DID methods and DID-focused efforts.

We will work with interested groups – including DID method creators, DID innovators, and DID adopters – to develop a detailed roadmap. This will include plans that extend beyond method-by-method standardization: e.g., development of standards and conformance criteria applicable across DID method capabilities or traits.

Next steps

This joint effort between leading organizations in the decentralized identity community is the first of its kind. We believe this speaks to the criticality of DIDs, and will further accelerate adoption. We invite you to be a part of this important collaboration.
