We've been blown away by the positive reception to the DID Method standardization LOI. We wanted to thank you for your support, and also provide clarifications and updates.
First, some answers to common questions about the LOI
- How do I get involved?

- Has it started already?
No, and apologies that there was a typo in the timeline. We're just getting started, so sign up if you haven't already!
- Does this effort mean all DID methods have to be standardized in a certain organization like DIF or W3C?
No – In fact our goal is open collaboration so that DID method creators / backers can standardize where they choose. The effort mentioned in the LOI is twofold:
- Initial working group to standardize a cross-section of a few widely-implemented DID methods. This will use the liaison structure referenced in the LOI to ensure open participation.
- Longer-term ongoing collaborative efforts: the above work will result in artifacts that are useful across a range of DID methods. How can we organize efforts that are beneficial across efforts and standards organizations? What kinds of artifacts are helpful, and what are useful grouping techniques (e.g., based on the DID Rubric, or DID “Traits").
The latter is necessarily longer lead, but the idea is to establish touchpoints early on to better reuse efforts.
